Tsunami hazard at the Western Mediterranean Spanish coast from seismic sources
نویسنده
چکیده
Spain represents an important part of the tourism sector in the Western Mediterranean, which has been affected in the past by tsunamis. Although the tsunami risk at the Spanish coasts is not the highest of the Mediterranean, the necessity of tsunami risk mitigation measures should not be neglected. In the Mediterranean area, Spain is exposed to two different tectonic environments with contrasting characteristics. On one hand, the Alboran Basin characterised by transcurrent and transpressive tectonics and, on the other hand, the North Algerian fold and thrust belt, characterised by compressive tectonics. A set of 22 seismic tsunamigenic sources has been used to estimate the tsunami threat over the Spanish Mediterranean coast of the Iberian peninsula and the Balearic Islands. Maximum wave elevation maps and tsunami travel times have been computed by means of numerical modelling and we have obtained estimations of threat levels for each source over the Spanish coast. The sources on the Western edge of North Algeria are the most dangerous, due to their threat to the South-Eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula and to the Western Balearic Islands. In general, the Northern Algerian sources pose a greater risk to the Spanish coast than the Alboran Sea sources, which only threaten the peninsular coast. In the Iberian Peninsula, the Spanish provinces of Almeria and Murcia are the most exposed, while all the Balearic Islands can be affected by the North Algerian sources with probable severe damage, specially the islands of Ibiza and Minorca. The results obtained in this work are useful to plan future regional and local warning systems, as well as to set the priority areas to conduct research on detailed tsunami risk. In the Tsunami of Dec. 26, 2004, although there was a large distance between the earthquake center of Indian Ocean and coastal cities of Iran, the Tsunami waves brought some damages in Chabahar coast. This means that if the earthquake center was closer to Iran, Iran’s coastal regions would have confronted serious danger... In the present study, we used ComMIT software (Community Model Int...

S U M M A R Y We evaluate far-field tsunami hazard in the Indian Ocean Basin based on hydrodynamic simulations of ten case studies of possible mega earthquakes at the major seismic zones surrounding the basin. They represent worst-case scenarios of seismic rupture along the full extent of seismogenic faults having supported large earthquakes in the historical record. In a series of numerical ex...

Tsunami waves are the most underrated hazard affecting the life near coastal belts. With socio-economic developments in coastal region results in more hazardous from tsunami. The hazard assessment of tsunami is highly vital. The Makran region is exceptional in closure zone of Tethys; it is only segment east of the Mediterranean and west of Andaman arc in which subduction of oceanic lithosphere ...

The Makran subduction zone in northeast and the Sumatra subduction zone (Sunda) in the west have been known as tsunamigenic zones of the Indian Ocean. The 990 km long Makran subduction zone is located offshore of Iran, Pakistan and Oman. Similar to many subduction zones all over the world, the Makran accretionary prism is associated with an imbricate of thrust faults across the zone, which may ...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of Tsunami Waves Associated With Worst Earthquake Scenarios of the Makran Subduction Zone in the Jask Port, Iran
The recent studies show that the past researches may have significantly underestimated earthquake and tsunami hazard in the Makran Subduction Zone (MSZ) and this region is potentially capable of producing major earthquakes. In this study, the worst case possible earthquake scenarios of the MSZ are simulated using fully nonlinear boussinesq model to investigate tsunami hazards on the Jask Port, ...
